You could have fried your hard drive by holding the button in to turn off the computer repetitive times over the course of when you received the computer. Also, unplugging the cord in the back and or flipping the switch on the back. Not turning the computer off by going to Start > Turn Off Computer can very well fry your hard drive and the data might not be retrievable.
