Do you have to avoid certain foods? How about lying down after eating?

Symptoms of acid reflux include pain and discomfort after eating high-fat and high-acid
foods, and this could be your diagnosis. This article
can teach you how to eliminate your symptoms.

When you eat high fat foods like fried chicken, your stomach empties very slowly.
This allows it to become distended and your esophagus may fill up with acid.
Choose healthier foods like lean proteins or beans to avoid
this situation and you should be able to control your acid reflux
like a pro.

Did you know that losing weight can help tame the symptoms
of GERD? There is scientific proof that having too much body fat leads to the release of chemicals
which cause digestion not to function correctly. This can lead
to acid reflux and its resulting suffering. Shed the pounds and feel better!

It is a good idea to raise the head of your
bed if you have been experiencing acid reflux issues frequently.
When you are lying flat, it gives the stomach contents an easier way of refluxing.
You should raise the mattress about 6-8 inches in order to get the best results.

Don't just treat the symptoms of acid reflux with antacids. This does nothing to help reverse the damage caused to the esophagus caused by acid. You'll need to make lifestyle changes that prevent acid reflux from occurring to allow the esophagus to
heal itself and prevent serious problems in the future.

Do not smoke. If you smoke now, do your best to
stop and if you don't smoke, do not pick up the habit. If you smoke, quit. Smoking has the ability to cause your lower esophageal sphincter to fail and not be able to do its job of blocking stomach acid.

Consume smaller meals to help control your acid reflux problems. When you over stuff yourself during a meal, it can often lead to uncomfortable digestive upset, including acid reflux. Instead, consider eating several small meals a day, and always stop eating as soon as you begin to feel satisfied.

Certain foods cause acid reflex more than other foods. Keeping a diary of your eating habits can help you understand when acid reflux is at its worst. After you've eaten, if you begin to feel
acid reflux symptoms, write down what you ate, what the symptoms
are, and how they are affecting you.

Don't drink when you eat. If you consume a beverage at the same time you are consuming food, your stomach goes into overdrive. This excess stress and pressure make reflux happen. Instead only take tiny sips of water during the meal, and save drinking full glasses until between meals.

Keep a journal. If you can track when and what you are doing when you have an acid attack, you might be able to alter your life to eliminate those attacks. Write down what you eat, what you have done that day and if you have had any discomforts. You may be surprised at what you find and how easy it is to eliminate some of your problems.

You should not eat within the few hours before you hit the sack. Your stomach cannot properly digest if you are laying down. When you eat close to bedtime, you will probably be awoken from heartburn.

Carry chewing gum with you if you suffer from reflux, and try to chew a piece after every meal. Chewing gum promotes the production of saliva, and this can help to neutralize the production of stomach acids in your digestive tract. For best results, choose a cinnamon or fruit variety as opposed to mint, which can make symptoms worse.

Consider keeping a food diary if you suffer from reflux. There are several foods that are often found to be acid reflux triggers for some individuals. They include things like tomatoes, onions, coffee, tea and even chocolate. If you keep a food diary, you can easily spot when your reflux problems are taking place and which foods appear to be causing the problems.

Reduce or eliminate your alcoholic consumption because alcohol can interfere with gastric emptying. As a result, your acid reflux can worsen. If you cannot completely eliminate alcohol, then try consuming it in moderate amounts and diluting it with water or soda. In addition, if you are a wine drinker, try white wine rather than red because white doesn't
flare up acid reflux symptoms as bad.

Enjoy a stick of gum after your meals. The chewing motions helps increase your digestive juices which helps your body
process its food faster. Additionally, avoid chewing minty type gum,
such as peppermint or spearmint, as these are known to relax stomach muscles.
Instead, opt for either cinnamon or fruit flavored gum.

If you have acid reflux, be sure to wear comfortable and loose clothing.
The tighter your clothes are, the more pressure there is
on your stomach. This can aggravate any reflux you may be experiencing.
At the first sign of symptoms, get on your favorite comfortable pants!
If you plan to consume a sizable meal, consider donning loose, comfy attire before you sit down to
eat.

Exercising your abdominal muscles could cause acid reflux.
You should get some exercise after eating to make digestion easier,
but going for a walk is enough. Avoid lifting things or putting any kind of pressure on your abs.
If your job requires you to be active immediately after your lunch break, choose your foods carefully.

What you drink is important when it comes to acid reflux.
Consuming large quantities of liquid at meal times can cause symptoms.
If you lower the amount of liquid you drink,
it can help eliminate reflux.

Relax for at least an hour after every meal. Sit down and allow your body to digest without putting pressure on
your stomach. Don't lie down or recline, though, as acid can begin to move up your esophagus if you do. Sit straight and still and do some work or meditate.

Start using more honey if you have acid reflux. Even though studies haven't proved
that honey directly aids in acid reflux reduction, it can reduce other symptoms that
potentially contribute to your acid reflux.
As a result, consuming honey can indirectly improve
your acid reflux. Do not buy pasteurized honey, though.

Now that you have read all of these simple tips, tricks, helpful hints and expert secrets, you are truly on
your way to becoming an expert on acid reflux disease.
Not only will you be able to share your knowledge with others,
but you'll also be able to deal with your own condition. Good luck!
