Guns were a show of money and power but the crossbow was still used as the main military weapon by most even up into the late 18th century, unless you had a preference for longbow, which was considered to be completly replaced in military service in the late 17th century

Given the choice between the ancient guns, longbows, or crossbows, I prefer crossbows
